Open and Check Out
On occasion, multiple co-workers may need access to edit, revise, proofread and review the same document. With a traditional server file share there's no real way to manage who is working on which document and consequently it is quite possible to accidentally overwrite the revisions made by a colleague.
With SharePoint's check-in and check-out feature, overwriting edits is impossible because when a document is checked out, no-one else can make edits to that document until it is checked back in again.
